It’s been Six Long Years since Mike went Missing

Today marks the 6th anniversary of our son Michael James Bosma’s disappearance from Kelowna BC. How can something feel like a million years ago and yet so fresh?. Our lives have been forever changed since Mike  went missing. As a family we have endured the past six years of uncelebrated birthdays, the huge void at any family gathering and the anguish of waiting for a unidentified body to be ID not sure what to hope for. Never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that one of our children could just vanish off the face of the earth. The helpless feeling of not knowing where our son is has been the hardest thing to learn to live with. The worst part is that your loved one’s remains could be found somewhere and not be identified for a long time…if ever.  I know I have said this many times but there really is a need for a data base for missing people of Canada.

Because Michael suffered from Mental Illness (and trust me when I say Mental Illness is very much a suffering disease) the easy explanation is that he took his own life, which in itself is a whole new horror. But there has never been any evidence of that,no body has been found and Michael is not the only young, vibrant, healthy man to go missing. Since Michael has gone missing almost 40 other young men  have gone missing in BC alone. I am astonished and amazed at how many people go missing and how little we hear about them. If your lucky your loved one makes the headlines for a few days.

This year the RCMP officer that looked after Mike’s case retired and I met the new officer. He will be handling Mike’s case from now on and will contact us if there is any news. I was informed that last year someone using the name Michael Bosma with the same birth date was stopped at the Border of the USA and Manitoba. The authorities contacted the local RCMP and soon realized that this was not the Michael Bosma that is missing from Kelowna BC. However it was encouraging to know that this investigation is on going and that Mike’s name is still in the “system.” When I met the new officer in charge of Mike’s case we agreed that a Press Release would happen this year to see if anybody remembers anything from that January day six years ago. We just need to know where our son is. He needs to be with his family. Hopefully this press release will happen…..

Here is the list  of men that are missing age 35 years and younger  by Name and Date since Mike went missing January 2006. Some of these men do have mental health issues, and some are known to the police but is there some sort of connection?  How do people especially young  men disappear and no one has seen or heard anything?

It’s very Hard to Keep a Missing Adult Case in the Media

When an adult goes missing even reporting them missing can take time. I think a lot of people just can’t actually believe that someone they love and care about could just vanish and quite often will begin the search themselves.  Even when you report a missing adult to the police there is not the same concern as if it were a child….of course! Usually it will take anywhere from 3-4 days before the media picks up on it. If your lucky it will be picked up by media across the country because  that will get the most exposure about your missing loved one. Our son Michael had been missing for almost a week before we were able to do a press release with the RCMP. We were both absolutely exhausted and so very worried about our missing son.

Unfortunately the media reports ‘new’ News and if there is nothing ‘new’ about the missing person case it soon becomes less news worthy. However you can contact the news with any updates or on the anniversary ( week, month, year etc) and if your lucky you will have  your missing loved one mentioned again in the media. All it takes is one person to have that missing information that can explain where your missing loved has disappeared to.

It is very frustrating (and sad) when you have a missing loved one and it is on your mind 24 hours a day. Our son Michael went missing almost 6 years ago and its the last thing I think about before I fall asleep and the first thing I think about when I wake up. I am so thankful for our other two children ( and now two amazing grandchildren) and they are constantly on my mind as well. I think as parents we  think   about our children no matter what age they are.

When I started this blog the beginning of this year I knew there was a lot of young men in BC but I am really amazed at how remain missing, vanished it seems. Some of the missing can be explained, perhaps they live a high risk lifestyle, have mental health issues, and some may want to be missing. But if you look at how many men are missing and removed the possibilities of why they went missing, (just because of their lifestyle does not necessarily mean that’s why they went missing)you have a lot of people who have just disappeared.

Scumbag Car Thief, Xiao Sean Zhang, 25, Missing March 31 2011 Vancouver BC

This piece of work deserves to be behind bars for a long time. Stealing cars is one thing but having a total disregard for an innocent persons life is another. I’m sure many people remember the horrible incident where a visitor from New Zealand, Dr.David Higgins was hit while using a cross walk in Vancouver. Instead of stopping Xiao (AKA ‘scumbag’ in my world) took off at a high speed with Dr. Higgins still on the hood and when he went screaming around a corner Dr. Higgins was thrown off the hood and died. Witnesses to this cowardly act were so outraged that they used their cars to chase down Xiao and boxed him in. Unbelievably Xiao rammed those vehicles in order to escape. To add insult to injury Xiao was only sentenced to 11 months in jail for the death of Dr.Higgins. What kind of sentence is that? It’s a joke…only no one is laughing!
Now it seems that Xiao is finding cars for sale on Craig’s List and taking the car for a test drive and never going back. Xiao is now the most wanted car thief in BC.
I still have a hard time getting over his sentence of 11 months for the death of an innocent person killed while using a cross walk!
